video review : Friday The 13th

Though there is more to this horror flick than “babes in the woods”, there are some pretty girls in it. A quirky one gets her throat slashed. Another takes an axe to the forehead. They’re counselors at Camp Crystal Lake; a place haunted not by ghosts but an inconspicuous killer, the deranged motives of which aren’t revealed till day’s end.

video review : Tremors

What’s best about Tremors is the way it traps its characters together in confined spaces. It’s like Night Of The Living Dead except it’s daytime in Nevada, the killers; huge snake-like creatures that eat people alive by tracking their vibrations from underground; aren’t dead and the movie isn’t great.

It isn’t quite good neither, but it is somewhat entertaining in a wacky cliché sort of way. The theme is mostly comedy and there are funny parts; the two leading handymen banter back and forth thru the whole movie; but I wonder how much better it could be if it took itself more seriously.

Use your hand to cover the “M” on the opening title shot. It’ll be the most entertaining part of the movie. Not that this Boston crime story will necessarily put you to sleep. It’s just that director Scott Cooper is a poor man’s Martin Scorsese.

It’s a case of style over substance as Johnny Depp, looking like an actor in costume, plays the role of Winter Hill Gang leader James Whitey Bulger. The plot preludes his life as a fugitive, but it’s barely interesting enough to make you care.
