audio review : Book Of Ryan ( album ) … Royce Da 5-9
While an early Eminem feature stands as a major highlight; Royce can never seem to outshine his Bad Meets Evil partner; the album’s magnum opus is a Christmas narrative entitled Power and Royce seems to know it. It’s the only song allowed to go long as the rapper sings the title bit like a career crooner.
The rest of the Book follows the same theme; Royce reminiscing à la Masta Ace on his last two albums; but he’s best when free to rap without conceptual restrictions. He’s worst when he’s just talking, as on the Skits, because his bravado gets annoying when it isn’t encased in clever rhyme schemes.

audio review : The Bar Exam 4 ( mixtape ) … Royce Da 5-9
“I’m better than the young’uns,” Royce insists in regard to his rap skill, “I’m better than the legends.” I agree if he’s referring to most. Jay-Z, 2Pac, Biggie; all overrated if you ask me. When it comes to dope lyricism, Royce Da 5-9 is the real deal. He’s not on level with Bad Meets Evil partner Eminem and he seems to know it, but this mixtape; the fourth in his Bar Exam series; has him rapping probably the best he has since his 1999 debut. There’s a lot of clever wordplay, but his skills plummet when it comes to making whole songs; a problem for most rappers.
