video review : Supergirl

Helen Slater is pretty enough as Supergirl; Superman’s younger cousin; but it’s her nemesis Selena who gets the beauty (butterfly) lighting for what seems like every scene she’s in. That’s just part of what makes this movie; a big-budget fantasy adventure; as campy and silly as it is; traits you’d have to embrace to fly anywhere near enjoying it.

video review : Dawn Of The Dead

Though infested with killer zombies, nothing in this movie; a remake of George Romero’s Night sequel; is as Dead as the dialogue and plot, both of which lurk in dark contrast to an interesting setup. Instead of a house, Dawn traps its unfortunates; a group of wise-cracking dimwits who do things only characters in horror movies seem to do, like stand too close to running chainsaws; in a Milwaukee shopping mall.

video review : The BFG

video review : The BFG

This Disney adaption of The BFG, a 1982 children’s book by Roald Dahl, might have been big fun if director Steven Spielberg had taken more liberties with the plot. The first few minutes, in which a giant old man snatches a little orphan girl in the dead of night, are somewhat intriguing, but the story doesn’t really go anywhere interesting from there. The dream catching bit is silly and the Giant’s bombastic lingo is annoying, though scenes in which he hides her from Giant Country villains offer playful suspense.
