audio review : Cabin In The Sky ( album ) ... De La Soul

The overarching theme of this album has to do with Dave’s death. His absence is acknowledged from the opening roll call. Hearing him rap on the same virtual tribute project as if he’s still a living member of De La Soul makes for an awkward listening experience, especially when the inferior demo-like quality of his verse (Package) suggests obvious posthumous shenanigans.

Not that there aren’t hints of the good old days. Prince Paul; the only producer they ever need; is sadly missing in action, but Will Be is nostalgic fun while it lasts. Patty Cake, led by a gorgeous organ loop, could’ve been a lot sweeter with a better chorus. Perhaps the same can be said for Truth; a throwback to when the rappers were more playful with their vocal delivery.

audio review : Victory ( album ) … Slick Rick

audio review : Victory ( album ) ... Slick Rick

This is Slick Rick’s first album since the 1990s and, from the sound of it, not much has changed. He still raps like Slick Rick and these lo-fi beats could have easily come from that era. That’s a good thing. The songs are indolently short and the set is short on singing; his most charming musical attribute; but it’s otherwise a proper follow-up to The Art Of Storytelling. Royal highlights include Landlord and Spirit To Fly.

audio review : The Ruler’s Back ( album ) … Slick Rick

audio review : The Ruler's Back ( album ) ... Slick Rick

The Ruler’s Back, but is he really? This Slick Rick album, produced entirely by Vance Wright with the exception of an incongruous club coda by Mr Lee, is mostly underwhelming. The constant scratch samples, on every song, give the set a monotonous tone. The highlights; all stories about dating girls; include Runaway, Venus and Mistakes Of A Woman In Love With Other Men.
