video review : 28 Years Later

This story should’ve taken place 28 Months Later to leave room for the sequel it so blatantly sets up at the end. Not that it matters much. 28 Days Later is a good horror flick that, like most, should’ve been left alone. These sequels simply aren’t up to par.

The plot, like its characters, runs away from the zombies it’s supposed to be about. They’re a conceptual underlining to what has become, even more so than before, a kindred love story. The peak, when the action should be in high gear, is slow and soppy.

When the zombies from 28 Days Later invade your hideout, you do whatever you have to do to survive, so when Don leaves his wife to die, he has the right idea. I’d abandon the kids too; they restarted this mess; but he never gets the chance. Instead they’re coddled and ultimately sacrificed for by total strangers.

Movie clichés are favored over realism; what Don later does to make up to his aforementioned wife is profoundly stupid; but that’s par for the course. It’s what keeps the plot moving forward. This sequel is definitely worse than the original, but it’s interesting enough to hold your anticipation for the next 28 months.

A bicycle courier named Jim awakes in an empty hospital to discover he’s in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. That’s the gist of the plot as he goes on to meet other survivors. The infected creatures they encounter are particularly scary because they’re fast and aggressive. The uninfected ones are even worse. Their dreadful predicament is resolved too conveniently in the end, even for a horror flick, but it’s a riveting journey all the way.

video review : Michael Chandler versus Paddy Pimblett at UFC 314

I don’t even like Michael Chandler and I was rooting for him to get a knockout win here. That’s how annoying his opponent is. “Whether you hate him or love him,” Joe Rogan declares, “all eyes are on Paddy Pimblett when he fights.” The more he wins, the truer that statement becomes. Chandler is his toughest foe yet and he makes relatively easy work of him without so much as a scratch. Oh well. Maybe next time.
