Sean Strickland seemed on the verge of finally becoming a star in The UFC after stealing the show at the 276 Press Conference. Full of wisecracks and knowing how close he was to a title shot; Alex Pereira has clearly been put on the fast track to one; he seemed more interested in taunting Israel Adesanya about getting “slept” by Pereira than Pereira.
“Focus on this guy”, Champion Adesanya warned, “Cause, trust me, he will sleep you if not.” Strickland laughed it off. Cut to Pereira landing a left hook and, well, sleeping him “in the very first round”. It’s a shot to the chin, but it’s Strickland’s bonehead that made him think it was a good idea to stand right there in front of one of the best strikers in the division.

Mike Mathetha, known as Blood Diamond and better known as Israel Adesanya’s training partner, fails to live up to his hype in this UFC debut. Jeremiah Wells makes a blunder at the very start of the bout, which Diamond attempts to capitalize on, but he allows himself to get grabbed and eventually taken down. That’s the beginning of the end for the “highly touted” kickboxer who misses his one strike thrown.

Marvin Vettori insists he won the first bout, but, unless he’s as delusional as Israel Adesanya suggests in his victory speech, there’s no denying this one. Despite a few takedowns, one of which includes a near rear-naked choke Adesanya is slick enough to spin out of, Vettori does considerably worse this time around.
A lot of fans were speculating and debating about who improved more since their Fight Night pairing in 2018. The answer is clear, though Adesanya seems to move like he’s still carrying his weight from the Jan Błachowicz fight. Perhaps his Zen-like demeanor is just brought on by those new nose-breathing techniques.
