video review : Anderson Silva versus Vitor Belfort at UFC 126

Two leg kicks is the only action for almost the first three minutes of this bout. That’s probably because both Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort know they can get knocked out at a moment’s notice, especially Silva. Vitor Belfort is on a three-fight knockout streak.

He finally gets it going by, as Joe Rogan phrases it, tagging Silva with a left and the fight doesn’t last long from there. Silva, who displays outstanding head movement while dodging Belfort’s signature flurry, knocks him out with a front kick to the face. “Wow!”

At six feet, Megan Anderson is too tall for me to date; I like short girls, partly because tall ones remind me of trannies; but she’d be perfect for rough sex. That’s “rough” meaning her doing what she wants to me as she plays The Dominatrix, which should be her MMA fight name.

She’s not pretty in the face; she looks okay; but I’d worship those long legs, which, along with her arms, are aesthetically enhanced with what looks like gothic-style tattoos. She’s muscular but not to the point of masculinity. Her body is sexy in a womanly, albeit womanly warrior, way.

video review : Anderson Silva versus Chael Sonnen at UFC 117

video review : Anderson Silva versus Chael Sonnen at UFC 117

Chael Sonnen dominates Anderson Silva for nearly this entire bout. “Is it too early for Chael to start celebrating,” Joe Rogans asks rather rhetorically after the wrestler scores yet another takedown near the start of the fifth and final round. At that point, a victory seems inevitable.

“You know what; you could never count out a guy like Anderson Silva,” the commentator ponders as Sonnen continues to win the fight, “Let’s see how much he’s got left; what kind of weapons he can pull out of his arsenal.” Those are words that, in hindsight, would stand among Rogan’s wisest.

What Silva pulls out is a triangle (“Triangle!”) choke with just two minutes left on the clock. Sonnen struggles to free himself but eventually taps; it takes a video replay to confirm it; which must be devastating for him. Silva, now 12 and 0, remains champ by the slimest of margins.

audio review : Love Letter ( album ) … R Kelly

audio review : Love Letter ( album ) ... R Kelly

I give R Kelly credit for taking a big Step in the right direction. He handles all the production here, so this album is his most musically cohesive since the Happy People set. One of the most spirited parts, where he hosts a Christmas party remix for the Love Letter title song, is a virtual salute to that one.

Why the singer uses the metaphor of writing a Letter as opposed to sending a phone message is the question. The answer probably has to do with the album’s throwback vibe, inspired by the soul music of the 1970s and 1960s, as the cover image suggests, when letters and Radio were the thing for couples.

He compares the memory of making Love to a drunken girl in the back of a Taxi Cab to a printed photograph while channeling Michael Jackson at one point, but it’s the album’s best song. Number One Hit is another highlight. Most of the others lack the vocal melodies to match their pretty background music.

audio review : Forever ( album ) … Diddy

audio review : Forever ( album ) ... Diddy

The polished production and sleek presentation of this album; is that a GQ model on the cover; suggests Puff Daddy, P Diddy or whatever he’s calling himself these days wants it to be his magnum opus. Whether or not he succeeds; this is only his second solo project, so the only one we have to compare it to is No Way Out; is up for debate.

“Do you like it?” Nah; it’s a case of style over substance; but I like some of it. Gangsta Shit; a dedication to the gangster lifestyle; and Best Friend; a dedication to Jesus Christ; represent the rapper’s hypocritical mindset, but they’re the best songs. I also like the funny Mad Rapper interlude and Hurricane G’s introduction on PE 2000.

video review : Tony Ferguson versus Kevin Lee at UFC 216

I wouldn’t want to meet either of these guys on a dark street corner; Tony Ferguson looks like Count Orlok from Nosferatu; but Kevin Lee is more muscular and a little more intimidating. It’s his cardio that costs him this fight as he begins to tire in the second round, which eventually opens him up to a triangle choke.

audio review : Scarred ( song ) … Verb ( featuring Trick Daddy + Uncle Luke )

I don’t know what’s Scarred. Luke’s erratic bridge suggests he’s referring to a girl’s titties and pussy, perhaps from a violent sexcapade. Captain Dick is certainly forceful in his vocal delivery.

He’s the life of the party though, along with a fun synth loop the song wouldn’t be good without. Verb is a better rapper than Trick Daddy, but the way Trick ends his verse is classic comedy.

The Death Of Jack Hamilton ( story ) … Stephen King

Jack is John Hamilton; a real-life member of the infamous Dillinger Gang. This is Stephen King’s depiction of his final days told from the perspective of partner-in-crime Homer Van Meter.

It’s a narrative that reads like an old western à la Louis L’Amour. If it weren’t based on true events, The Death Of Jack Hamilton could’ve made for the start, or end, of an interesting series.

video review : Anderson Silva versus Yushin Okami at UFC 134

video review : Anderson Silva versus Yushin Okami at UFC 134

Yushin Okami, who reportedly claimed he would beat Anderson Silva up during the build-up to this fight, looks to be an about even match for the champion during the first round. That all changes in the second when Silva begins to, as Mike Goldberg puts it, push the pace.

There’s a moment reminiscent of Silva’s comical slaughter of Forrest Griffin as The Spider enters The Matrix. His head movement is “sick”, his punches, which don’t look like much, are accurate and powerful enough to floor Okami, who looks completely overwhelmed, terrified even.

Dolan’s Cadillac ( story ) … Stephen King

It’s not really about the car. It’s about Dolan himself; the “high-priced hoodlum” responsible for the death of a woman named Elizabeth. She was going to testify as an eyewitness against him in criminal court and probably have him sent to prison for a long time. This tale is told from the perspective of her widower husband Robinson.

What makes it work is that the goal; to avenge Elizabeth’s car bomb murder by killing Dolan in his Cadillac; is set from the beginning, resulting in a steady drive of anticipation as Robinson plans it out in meticulous detail. The story goes on a little too long at the end, but Dolan’s Cadillac stands as one of Stephen King’s best.

Northland Orange Juice

Northland Orange Juice

This is promoted as “100%” juice, but, according to the ingredients list, it’s not. The first ingredient is filtered water, the presence of which probably has more to do with cutting production costs than making it taste better. Still, for what it’s worth, the drink is sweet, tangy and refreshing.

If It Bleeds ( book ) … Stephen King

If It Bleeds ( book ) ... Stephen King

“If It Bleeds, it leads,” the old news trope goes, but what if it bores? That’s the problem with this book; a set of Stephen King novellas à la Full Dark No Stars, Four Past Midnight and Different Seasons. The worst is The Life Of Chuck; a fictional biography about a man I couldn’t care less about.

The best is Rat, which seems like it’s going to be a decent story; the headline here reads something like Novelist With Flu Stuck In Cabin During Killer Cyclone; until its ridiculous title character comes into play. It’s Stephen King’s preference for the strange and supernatural that ruins this one.

Mr Harrigan’s Phone, about a boy gifting a dying “luddite” with an iPhone, plods along drearily, though John Harrigan is probably the most interesting character If It Bleeds has to offer. The silly title bit, which stars Holly Gibney and follows The Outsider, is about a shapeshifting news reporter.
